New Opotiki Locals Join Our Team

It is a proud moment for us to be able to significantly grow our team here at Eastern Bay Concrete. We recently advertised six new jobs and have now filled those roles with people from the Opotiki community.

Winning the concrete contract for some major construction projects over the past year, including the Opotiki Footpaths project, the local mussel farm factory and more to be announced soon, has allowed Eastern Bay to create more new jobs for Opotiki.

“We have initially employed an additional six people to our crew,” explains managing director, Shane Clark. “This has increased the size of our business to 17 locally employed people.”

We are pleased to welcome the following people to our team:

  • Kaelib Paruru – Concrete Placer/Labourer
  • Poihipi Hati – Concrete Placer/Labourer
  • Ross Mottram – Workshop Maintenance
  • Brody Raukawa – Concrete Placer/Labourer
  • Rick Jones – Truck Driver/Yard Work
  • Michael Woods – Concrete Batcher/Truck Driver

With the aim of employing local wherever possible, we were already prepared to offer training to all new staff. Aside from the job opportunities, we are also helping our people to gain new skills and build a better future here for their families and our community.

To help get everyone trained as quickly as possible, we now have a buddy system in place where the experienced guys each have one new person to train.

“Our goal is to get everyone trained as quickly as possible because the workload is going to increase a lot within the next month or two so there is quite a steep learning curve,” says Shane. “And I’m pleased to say that they are all going really, really well.”

Aside from the increase in volume of concrete production and supply needed to meet the large scale projects, the total plant capacity has also increased with more trucks and batchers – all requiring more people to run, manage and maintain this machinery.

As Shane explains, “We’ve also added to our workshop maintenance team to better service our machinery and extra trucks.”

We look forward to sharing more news of our growth and projects with everyone here soon.
